The sphere distance compares street-direction measures on ℝP² modulo rotation about the vertical axis — grids match however they are oriented. The 3D W₂ alignment searches the most promising rotation candidates (see the method note). MDS embeds the distance matrix into 2D: nearby points are similarly-built cities.
